Branwell’s Flute and Hardy’s Hornpipe
Areas of Specialism
Our one hour presentation is an exploration of the lives of Branwell Bronte and Thomas
Hardy, through their love of music. Branwell Bronte, brother of the three famous Bronte
sisters, played the flute and we present music from his hand-written collection of
popular tunes of the day together with foot-tapping country dances from Thomas
Hardy’s treasured family collections. The dances are linked with related extracts from
Thomas Hardy’s novels and poems. Julia presents this enjoyable programme of music,
stories and anecdotes and Peter, a professional flautist, plays the music on an historic
flute.
